PRELUDE — It Is Well With My Soul

arr. Innes/DeCou

CALL TO WORSHIP — Janice Hinnant

Leader: God of morning and evening, you possess all the rhythms of our lives. In the morning, you are our comforter,

People: And in the evening, you are the cradle of the world.

Leader: You are here when we go away,

People: And you are waiting when we return.

Leader: You are the source from which our tears run unguarded,

People: And the place from which our holy laughter rises.

Leader: We claim that faith this morning, convinced that it is real, not by the persuasion of our minds, but by the stories our lives are writing.

People: We believe, O God, but sometimes our days are fragile.

All: You are the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer of our faith. All we ever need, your hand provides. Great is your faithfulness. Amen.

*HYMN OF PRAISE #48 — Great Is Thy Faithfulness

(Children, grade 5 and under may come forward on the final stanza.)

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father! There is no shadow of turning with Thee;

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not:

As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer, winter, springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above,

Join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see;

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

*OFFERTORY HYMN #57 — Be Still, My Soul

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on your side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;

Leave to your God to order and provide; in every change God faithful will remain.

Be still, my soul: your best, your heavenly friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

Be still, my soul: your God will undertake to guide the future, as in ages past.

Your hope, your confidence let nothing shake; all now mysterious shall be bright at last.

Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know

The Christ who ruled them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on when we shall be forever with the Lord,

When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone, sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.

Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past, all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

ANTHEM — God of Grace, Betsy Fee, violin; Sanctuary Choir

Keith Getty; arr. Loyd Larson

God of grace, amazing wonder, irresistible and free.

O the miracle of mercy, Jesus reaches down to me.

God of grace, I stand in wonder as my God restores my soul;

His own blood has paid my ransom,  awesome cost to make me whole.

God of grace who loved and knew me long before the world began,

Sent my Savior down from heaven, perfect God and perfect man.

God of grace, I trust in Jesus, I’m accepted as His own;

Every day new grace sustains me as I lean on Him alone.

God of grace, I stand astounded, cleansed, forgiven and secure.

All my fears are now confounded and my hope is ever sure.

God of grace, now crowned in glory where one day I’ll see Your face;

And forever I’ll adore You, in Your everlasting grace.

And forever I’ll adore You, in Your everlasting grace.

Lamentations 3:19-26

19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning;great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

     Leader: This is the word of the Lord.

     People: Thanks be to God.

SERMON — "Dealing with Desperation," Chuck Emory

from the Summer Sermon Series: Controlling Our Emotions

*HYMN OF COMMITMENT #407 — My Faith Looks Up to Thee

My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine!

Now hear me while I pray, take all my guilt away,

O, let me from this day by wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart strength to my fainting heart, my zeal inspire;

As Thou hast died for me, O may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be, a living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread, and griefs around me spread, be Thou my guide;

Bid darkness turn to day, wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me every stray from Thee aside.

When ends life’s transient dream, when death’s cold, sullen stream shall o’er me roll,

Blest Savior, then, in love, fear and distrust remove;

O bear me safe above, a ransomed soul!
