The Earle Street Baptist Church Pall
A pall is a large cloth that covers a casket. The Earle Street pall is made of white “Lamb of God” material, with symbols of Christ, the Lamb of God, embossed on the material (white on white). At the center of the pall is the Earle Street logo. The cross is the universal symbol of the Christian faith, and the distinctive cross used as our church logo is a symbol of our particular local church. So the pall that covers the casket today symbolizes that, by God’s grace through faith in Christ, Lenwood belongs to the universal family of God, and was a member of the Earle Street Baptist Church family. As Paul wrote in Galatians 3:27, "All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." The pall is a reminder of the promise of Scripture that all who are baptized into Christ have "clothed themselves" with Christ, and that all who are buried with Christ in baptism will be raised with him in newness of life. The white color of the pall symbolizes our faith that Lenwood has been clothed in the purity of Christ. On this occasion, it is appropriate to recall and celebrate Lenwood’s baptism, through which he entered the church, even as his body is brought into the church sanctuary for the last time.
